At our October meeting, Shannon Savage demonstrated making non-traditional inks. She mixed Gouache, dry pigment powder by Kremmer, black Chinese stick ink using a black slate grinding stone, and colored Chinese ink sticks using a gaken dish. She and Pam Hunter provided a wide variety of quality art paper for each of us to try. It was a rewarding day to visit with others, and find out how the different non-traditional inks responded to being written on quality paper. I have never given much thought to grinding my own ink but after seeing the demonstration, the vibrancy of the inks and how they flowed I would like to give it a try. The inks were so superior in color to the bottled inks.
